CORDELL BANK & BODEGA CANYON SEABIRD & MARINE MAMMAL TRIPS

LOOKING FOR STORM-PETRELS?

CORDELL BANK & BODEGA CANYON SEABIRDING 2014 PELAGIC TRIPS:
SEPTEMBER 1 & 19, 2014
Massive rafts of storm-petrels have been observed on Shearwater Journeys's offshore trips from Bodega Bay in recent years. Flocks number in the thousands have included: ASHY, BLACK, FORK-TAILED, LEAST AND WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS. On our September 20, 2013 trip, we recorded a record-breaking 17,325 storm-petrels! While on our September 21, 2012 trip a fly-by HAWAIIAN PETREL was spotted while we were watching the storm-petrels!

Since 1980 Shearwater Journeys has offered pelagic trips departing from Bodega Bay, north of Point Reyes and San Francisco. This is the longest running birding operation from this port.
 The areas that we cover on this departure have recorded more MEGA-RARE SEABIRDS than any other port in North America! The list is very long: SHORT-TAILED ALBATROSS, LIGHT-MANTELD ALBATROSS, SHY ALBATROSS (3 different individuals, separate trips);
MURPHY'S, COOK'S, HAWAIIAN, WHITE-CHINNED, PARKINSON'S and GREAT-WINGED PETRELS; GREAT, MANX, STREAKED, CORY'S, WEDGE-TAILED and FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATERS; LEAST STORM-PETREL (rare this far north, but might happen in 2014 due to warmer water); LONG-BILLED MURRELET and CRESTED AUKLET. These are some of the rarest of the rare seabirds in all of North America, and in some instances, the northern Pacific Ocean. (Great-winged Petrel represented the first record for the Northern Hemisphere, as well as North America!)

LONG-TAILED JAEGER, above and SOUTH POLAR SKUA, below.
This area can be fabulous for viewing all three species of jaegers. Skua is rarely missed on this trip.

The sheer numbers of marine mammals near Bodega Canyon can be astounding, during fall.

NOTE: The September 19 Bodega Bay trip can be combined with the September 21 Half Moon Bay trip for a weekend of seabirding and land birding on September 20. The September 1 trip could be hooked up with the early Monterey Bay trips on September 5 and 6, with land birding in between.

DETAILS FOR BODEGA BAY TRIPS: SEPTEMBER 1 & 19:
DEPARTURE: 7 a.m. SHARP. The boat will not wait for latecomers. Check in with Debi at the dock. RATE: $218
RETURN: About 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., varies. Allow for delays of several hours.
PARKING: is free in the large, dirt lot. Try to check out the location the day prior, as it can be confusing in the morning darkness. On Highway 1, heading north from Bodega Bay, proceed north of the Tide's Whart, past the Boat House restaurant on your left. Turn left, heading downhill at the large, brown sign for EAST SHORE ROAD. At the stop sign a the bottom of the hill, proceed straight to Port O' Bodega. It will seem as if you are heading out to the water. Park here.
PRICE ADJUSTMENT: all pricing is based on current rates and may be adjusted at the dockside. If so, this fee will be collected at the dock, between $10-20/person, cash only.
FOOD & DRINKS: Bring all of your food and drinks, including water. Nothing is available on the boat. No restaurants are open in the morning hours prior to departure. Dress VERY WARMLY.
MOTELS: in this area can be fully booked and can be quite expensive. Bodega Coast Inn and Suites is only 5 minutes from the dock. You might try asking the manage for the "Shearwater Discount" which they sometimes honor. Bodega Harbor Inn is conveniently located. Be sure to ask about their refund policy. You might find the rate shocking, compared to what you get. The Inn at the Tides is very nice, especially if you have family members traveling with you who will not be doing the boat trip. Their rate includes breakfast, but it is not served early enough for you to partake of it. Cheaper motels can be found along the Highway 101 corridor. However,  be SURE to allow a minimum of one hour to get to the dock from any motel along Highway 101. The roads leading to the dock are winding, two lane and can be foggy in the morning. It is possible to get stuck behind a truck pulling a trailer with a boat on it, going only 30 mph. Birders have missed the boat by not allowing enough time to make this trip! Refunds are not available for "no shows" at the dock! NO eating facilities are open early enough in the morning in Bodega Bay for breakfast. Please plan accordingly.
GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: Be sure to check toll details regarding crossing the bridge, even if you rent a car, if you are returning to San Francisco after the trip. The toll is only collected on the southbound trip.
Whew! That's a lotta reading!

There is something on offer for every birder, whether a beginner or seasoned salt, or a photographer. Our friendly and knowledgable leaders welcome all on board. Their worldwide sea birding experiences put them at the forefront of sea birding. More mega-rare seabirds have been discovered on Shearwater Journeys's trips than any other trips in North America. Shearwater Journeys offers the most comprehensive selection of seabirding trips on the West Coast. We offer trips departing from Monterey, Half Moon Bay, Bodega Bay and Sausalito to the Farallon Islands.

RESERVATIONS: Payment, in full by check or money order is required at the time of booking. (Credit cards are not accepted). The United States Coast Guard requires a name, address, cell/home phone and email for each person on the vessel. Please include this with your payment. TRIP REPORT: OCTOBER 18, 2013 SEABIRDS OF CORDELL BANK & BODEGA CANYON

Howdy, Birders,

This is a trip report for Shearwater Journeys' ten hour, October 18, 2013 pelagic trip departing from Bodega Bay and heading offshore to the Bodega Canyon and Cordell Bank. The morning began with fog nearshore which pushed out once we were offshore, permitting excellent visibility. We were about 30 miles offshore when I put out a huge slick and chumming effort which attracted at least some 45 BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSSES and hoards of NORTHERN FULMARS. At least three different LAYSAN ALBATROSSES made passes at the boat as well as two different FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATERS and several SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS . Leaving the slick, we continued to the Cordell Bank area where a BROWN BOOBY (Sonoma County) was spotted with a smaller, mixed flock of gulls and shearwaters. We refound it a second time in Marin County. One quite lost CACKLING GOOSE was more than 25 miles offshore. It sat down on the sea, right next to our boat. A couple of HUMPBACK WHALES were making quite a commotion, flailing their tail flukes and pectoral flippers, while groups of PACIFIC WHITE-SIDED and NORTHERN RIGHT WHALE DOLPHINS were bowriding for over an hour. No storm-petrels were detected even though we traveled through the areas where we have seen them recently. Perhaps, they have retreated south to the Pioneer Canyon. We'll find out when we head offshore there on October 27th from Half Moon Bay. The sea surface temperature had plunged to 52 degrees F. Seas were quite favorable with a long period northwest swell. All in all, we had a wonderful, although somewhat chilly, day offshore. All images, below, by leader Jennifer Green. Please do not use without permission.
BROWN BOOBY, above. As described by one non-birder boat captain to me — pointed on all four corners — which this image clearly shows!

Many thanks to all of the birders who joined us from near and far. The leaders on this day included: Steve Tucker, Jennifer Green, Lisa Hug, Debi Shearwater and Farley Connelly, chumming.

TRIP REPORT: SEPTEMBER 20, 2013 BODEGA BAY SPECTACULAR STORM-PETREL SAFARI

Howdy, Birders,
This is a trip report for Shearwater Journeys' September 20, 2013 pelagic trip departing from Bodega Bay. This was a pelagic trip for the record books! We found a SPECTACULAR STORM-PETREL BONANZA consisting of: 10,500+ ASHY STORM-PETRELS, 6,500+ FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS, 300 BLACK STORM-PETRELS and 25 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, for a GRAND TOTAL of 17,325+ STORM-PETRELS. This almost certainly represents a record count for storm-petrels anywhere in North America, by sea or air. In addition to the beautiful sea conditions and lovely weather, our day was highlighted by a GRAND SLAM of the JAEGER: POMARINE, PARASITIC and LONG-TAILED, as well as SOUTH POLAR SKUAS. Most of the usual fall seabirds were encountered. Marine mammals included: 15-17 BLUE WHALES, 12 HUMPBACK WHALES, 50 NORTHERN RIGHT WHALE DOLPHINS, 350 PACIFIC WHITE-SIDED DOLPHINS and 8 DALL'S PORPOISES. Pinnipeds included: CALIFORNIA SEA LION, STELLER'S SEA LION, NORTHERN FUR SEAL, NORTHERN ELEPHANT SEAL and HARBOR SEAL.
IT WAS A DAY FOR THE SEABIRD HISTORY BOOK.

All images, below, copyright, Steve N.G. Howell who co-lead this trip. Please do not use without permission. Steve N.G. Howell is the author of the recently published guide: PETRELS, ALBATROSSES & STORM-PETRELS of NORTH AMERICA: A PHOTOGRAPHIC GUIDE.

A very small portion of one of the rafts of storm-petrels, above, which shows how this looks from a distance.
Storm-petrel rafts (a flock of storm-petrels resting on the water) are typically very skittish in our area, rarely allowing close approach with a vessel. Most sources state that these storm-petrels are nocturnal feeders and rest on the ocean during the day.
LONG-TAILED JAEGER, above.

One of the many BLUE WHALES, above. Its coloration makes it blend in well.
STELLER'S SEA LION, above, rarely seen in our area.

An interesting HEERMANN'S GULL, above, as we approached the harbor. I'm betting that this image will appear in Steve N.G. Howell's forthcoming book about terns and jaegers, as the white wing patches clearly imitate a jaeger.

Many thanks to the birders who traveled from near and far to join our offshore trip. The leaders on this day were: Steve N.G. Howell, Peter Pyle, Lisa Hug, Adam Searcy, Steve Tucker and Debi Shearwater.
The complete species list follows. Except for the harbor and a few miles, we were in MARIN COUNTY for nearly the entire day.

More Trips + More Leaders + More Seabirds = MORE FUN!

Jump on board with Shearwater Journeys' Leaders!

September is here. The best days of seabirding are just around the corner. Like the BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS in the image above, being followed by SABINE'S GULLS, we at Shearwater Journeys, hope to lead you to the seabirds! I'm not sure about that little LONG-TAILED JAEGER, sitting on the water behind this crowd. Jump up, buddy! Don't miss the action.

Shearwater Journeys offers more seabird trips than anyone else on the West Coast. In fact, Debi Shearwater is the only full time pelagic tour operator in the U.S.A. (world?) Thirty eight years of organizing offshore pelagic trips, from Crescent City to San Diego,  has given her a depth and breadth of unsurpassable experience off the California Coast. Beginning September 6th from Monterey, she will do sixteen pelagic trips from three different ports, taking over 1,000 birders offshore! This gives her a feel and handle on not only where the seabirds can be found, but also where not to head to look for them. Negative data is important, too!

An amazing assemblage of leaders, some with decades of seabirding experience, and  most with worldwide seabirding experience, will be on board these trips. Below, please find our complete trip schedule for the remainder of 2013. Shearwater Journeys has always had a high number of leaders on board to provide you with a higher quality experience. Both beginners and "old salts" are welcome.

Note: some trips listed as LIMITED SPACES AVAILABLE are nearly sold out. Email Debi for these trips, or to be added to the waiting list. Trips color-coded could be great for photographers who need more space on board the boat. These trips are not packed full, although all trips have enough reservations to "go." Do you have a favorite leader? Check it out. More leaders may be added to some trips. Leaders are subject to change. All leaders are volunteers. KEY: MTY= Monterey; HMB= Half Moon Bay; FI= Farallon Islands; Bodega Bay; Albacore trip departs from Monterey. RESERVATIONS: If booking at the last minute, email Debi: debi@shearwaterjourneys.com for assistance.

TRIP REPORT: AUGUST 30, 2013 BODEGA BAY SEABIRD SPANISH TAPAS

Howdy, Birders,
This is a trip report for Shearwater Journeys' August 30, 2013 pelagic trip departing from Bodega Bay. This nearly 12 hour trip experience a mixture of fall seabirds, much like Spanish tapas — appetizing bits and pieces, here and there. The serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation because people are not so focused upon eating an entire meal. In some countries it is customary for diners to stand and move about while eating tapas. Well, that's exactly how this day went down. Great conversation. Outstanding showing of LONG-TAILED JAEGERS harassing flocks of SABINE'S GULLS. Nice, small rafts of ASHY STORM-PETRELS, while BLACK STORM-PETRELS and a few FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS, along with two WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS few into our oil slick. Loads and loads and loads of krill and schooling fish were visible on the fish finder. Krill of course meant that we saw BLUE WHALES. Numbers of RED PHALAROPES really jumped on this day. We did hit a nice "hard edge" of warm water, jumping from 58 to 60 degrees F. The question of the fall season remains: Where are the Cassin's Auklets? We should be seeing more of these alcids. They had a terrific breeding season at the Farallon Islands, laying eggs at a record early date, and double brooding, too. Wherever they are, I bet there's loads of krill there, too.
One of the many SABINE'S GULLS that put on quite a show, above.
LONG-TAILED JAEGERS were quite flashy.
A raft of SABINE'S GULLS, below.
Fog was with us for most of the day, but we still had reasonable visibility.

CORDELL BANK & BODEGA CANYON SEABIRD TRIPS

A small portion of a raft of FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS photographed by Dave Pereksta, copyright, near Bodega Canyon. This folk comprised 3000 FORK-TAILED STORM-PETRELS, 1000 ASHY STORM-PETRELS and 1000 BLACK STORM-PETRELS on September 21, 2012. As if that wasn't enough leader, Todd McGrath spotted a HAWAIIAN PETREL that zipped by!

Since 1980 Shearwater Journeys has offered pelagic trips departing from Bodega Bay, north of Point Reyes and San Francisco. The vessel for our three departures this season will be the New Sea Angler, a 65' comfortable sport fisher that can accommodate 49 birders. This vessel is an excellent birding platform. Our captain, Rick Powers is intimately acquainted with birding and birders.

The areas that we cover on this departure have recorded more mega-rare seabirds than any other port in North America! The list is very long: SHORT-TAILED, SHY (three different times), LAYSAN, LIGHT-MANTELED ALBATROSSES; MURPHY'S, COOK'S, HAWAIIAN, WHITE-CHINNED, PARKINSON'S and GREAT-WINGED PETRELS; GREAT, MANX, STREAKED, CORY'S, WEDGE-TAILED and FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATERS; LEAST STORM-PETREL; LONG-BILLED MURRELET and CRESTED AUKLET. These are some of the rarest of the rare seabirds in all of North America, and in some instances, the northern Pacific Ocean. (Great-winged Petrel represented the first record for the Northern Hemisphere, as well as North America).

CORDELL BANK & BODEGA CANYON 2013 PELAGIC TRIPS:

AUG. 30, FRI.
SEP. 20, FRI.
OCT. 18, FRI.

DETAILS FOR BODEGA BAY TRIPS:
DEPARTURE: 7:00 a.m., SHARP.  The boat will not wait for latecomers. Check in with Debi at the dock.
RETURN: About 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Allow for delays of several hours.
PARKING: is free in the large, dirt lot. Try to find the location the day prior, as it can be confusing in the morning darkness.  On Highway 1, heading north from Bodega Bay, proceed north of the Tides' Wharf, past the Boat House restaurant on your left. Turn left, heading downhill at the large, brown sign for EAST SHORE ROAD. At the stop sign at the bottom of the hill, proceed straight to Port O'Bodega. It will seem as if you are heading out to the water. Park here.
PRICE ADJUSTMENT: All fees quoted are at the 2012 rates. A price adjustment of $10-20 per person may be collected, in cash only, at the dockside should rates increase.
FOOD & DRINKS: Bring all of your food and drinks. Nothing is available on the boat. There are no restaurants open in the morning hours prior to departure.
MOTELS: in the area can be fully booked and can be expensive. Bodega Coast Inn and Suites is only 5 minutes from the dock. You might try asking the manager for the "Shearwater Discount" which they sometimes honor. Bodega Harbor Inn is conveniently located. Be sure to ask about their refund policy. And, the Inn at the Tides is very nice, if you have family members traveling with you who will not be doing the boat trip. Cheaper motels can be found along the Highway 101 corridor. However, be SURE to allow a minimum of one hour to get to the dock from any motel along 101. The two lane roads are winding, confusing and can be fogged in.  It is possible to get stuck behind a truck pulling a trailer with a boat on it, going only 30 mph. Birders have missed the boat by not allowing enough time to make this trip! NO eating facilities are open in the morning hours in Bodega Bay.
GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: Be sure to check toll payment details regarding crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, if you plan to cross it when southbound.

SHEARWATER JOURNEYS 2013 CALENDAR

Greetings, Seabirders,

Shearwater Journeys is pleased to announce the 2013 program of pelagic trips. The year 2012 was filled with a great variety of seabirds and marine mammals. HAWAIIAN PETREL, spotted by sharp-eyed seabirder, Todd McGrath, was a highlight of the September 21 Bodega Bay pelagic trip. Highlights of 2011 included a GREAT-WINGED PETREL on August 26, Monterey Bay, seen again, on September 17, Half Moon Bay and a GREAT SHEARWATER on July 30, Half Moon Bay. LAYSAN ALBATROSS, pictured above, was seen on many of our trips. Of course, many of the "regular" fall migrants were recorded throughout the season. These will be summarized in future blog posts.Whether you are new to seabirding, or a seasoned "salt" or a keen photographer,  Shearwater Journeys invites you to join our outstanding and friendly leaders to witness the soaring albatrosses on our offshore trips.

RESERVATIONS: Payment, in full by check or money order is required at the time of booking. For folks from outside of the USA or Canada, please contact Debi for assistance with reservations. Please note: The rates on this schedule are the same as the 2012 rates! Fuel has increased steadily for the past 36 days in California. There is no telling where or when it will stop. Therefore, some boat owners have not yet set their summer/fall rates. A fuel surcharge may be necessary at the dockside to cover any forthcoming increases. Please include the full name, address, phone/email of each person in your party when making a reservation. This is required by the United States Coast Guard. Please note: Debi will be out of the office from June 4 through July 10. For more information, please contact Debi at: debi@shearwaterjourneys.com; 831-637-8527. Send your reservation to: Shearwater Journeys, PO Box 190, Hollister, CA 95024. Spaces are currently available on all trips. When a trip is sold out, it will be listed as "Sold Out" on this blog and on the web site.

Wishing you shearwaters and albatrosses and fare seas!

MANX SHEARWATER: OCTOBER 26, 2012 BODEGA BAY

IMAGES OF THE DAY
by

Howdy, Seabirders,
Bodega Head's resident naturalist, Jackie Sones captured some terrific images on the Shearwater Journeys's pelagic trip departing from Bodega Bay on October 26, 2012. Jackie has not only posted these images, but also very helpful identification tips on her blog. Of the seven species of shearwaters observed on this trip, the MANX SHEARWATER, below, was the rarest find of the day. Jackie's description and explanation of the tricks of lighting are, well, enlightening!
FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATERS are highly sought after and October is the single best month for sightings.
Surprising numbers of BULLER'S SHEARWATERS, sitting in flocks, were nearshore. Jackie's image, below, surely shows the "shear - water."
SOUTH POLAR SKUAS, powerful birds and crowd pleasers, put on quite a show.
All images, copyright, Jackie Sones. Please do not use without permission.

TRIP REPORT: OCTOBER 26, 2012 BODEGA CANYON & CORDELL BANK

Howdy, Seabirders,
This is a trip report for Shearwater Journeys's pelagic trip departing from Bodega Bay, October 26, 2012. Highlights included: good numbers of BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSSES and NORTHERN FULMARS; SEVEN SPECIES OF SHEARWATERS: PINK-FOOTED, FLESH-FOOTED, BULLER'S, SOOTY, SHORT-TAILED, MANX and BLACK-VENTED; good numbers of SOUTH POLAR SKUA and POMARINE JAEGER; five late LONG-TAILED JAEGERSEIGHT SPECIES OF GULLS: BONAPARTE'S, HEERMANN'S, MEW, CALIFORNIA, HERRING, THAYER'S, WESTERN and GLAUCOUS-WINGED; COMMON MURRES; RHINOCEROS and CASSIN'S AUKLETS rounded out the day. The marine mammal show was excellent, with BLUE, HUMPBACK and GRAY WHALES; and NORTHERN RIGHT WHALE DOLPHINS and PACIFIC WHITE-SIDED DOLPHINS. Sea surface temperatures ranged from 54 F to 57.8 F. We encountered quite a bit of life at the 100 fathom line, although we made it as far as 650 fathoms 28.5 miles offshore, beyond Bodega Canyon and crossing over the Cordell Bank on the return ride. It was aggravatingly sunny all day long, preventing us from looking at any wildlife in the direction of the sun, which seemed to be often. Leader, Peter Pyle, spotted the MANX SHEARWATER just outside of the harbor. Three FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATERS gave outstanding views to everyone on board, circling off the stern of our vessel. The SOUTH POLAR SKUAS, in particularput on quite a show, repeatedly circling the boat overhead. Seas were decent in the morning, but increasing throughout the day with whitecaps being the norm on the ride home. On board the best party boat in Northern California, we did just fine, however.

This was our last pelagic trip of the 2012 season from Bodega Bay. Shearwater Journeys will be offering pelagic trips departing from Bodega Bay on these dates in 2013:
AUGUST 30, FRIDAY
SEPTEMBER 20, FRIDAY
OCTOBER 18, FRIDAY
Don't miss out on the action. Trips to this area have more "mega" seabird records than any other offshore area in the United States. This year's "mega" was a Hawaiian Petrel on September 21

Many thanks to all of the local birders and out-of-state/country birders who joined us on this day. The leaders for this trip were: Peter Pyle, Jennifer Green and Debi Shearwater. We were in Sonoma County until about 12:30. After that, we were in Marin County until about 2:45 p.m. We returned to the dock about 5 p.m.

The complete species list follows.

TRIP REPORT: WESTERN FIELD ORNITHOLOGISTS MEETING

WESTERN FIELD ORNITHOLOGISTS' MEETING PELAGIC TRIPS with
SHEARWATER JOURNEYS
Howdy, Seabirders,

This is a trip report for Shearwater Journeys' pelagic trips on SEPTEMBER 27 (two boats out of Bodega Bay, including one for photographers), SEPTEMBER 30 (from Sausalito to the Farallones Islands) and OCTOBER 1 ( from Half Moon Bay), 2012. These trips were offered in conjunction with the Western Field Ornithologists' Annual Conference held in Petaluma, CA. Highlights were many and varied, including six species of shearwaters: a light morph WEDGE-TAILED, MANX, FLESH-FOOTED, BULLER'S, SOOTY and PINK-FOOTED; LAYSAN and BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSSES; NORTHERN FULMAR; five species of storm-petrels, FORK-TAILED, ASHY, BLACK, WILSON'S and LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS; all three jaegers: NORTHERN GANNET, POMARINE, PARASITIC and LONG-TAILED: SOUTH POLAR SKUA; SABINE'S GULL; ARCTIC TERN, RHINOCEROS and CASSIN'S AUKLETS and MARBLED MURRELETS. Please see the trip compilation list, below.

On SEPTEMBER 27th, two boats departed from a very foggy Bodega Bay harbor. Dense, cold fog would continue throughout the day, sometimes pushing back far enough to view more seabirds. One of these boats was a dedicated photographers' special trip, while the other boat was our regular seaworthy vessel, the "New Sea Angler." BLACK STORM-PETREL, below, was the first storm-petrel of the day. Shearwater Journeys' September 21 trip to Bodega Canyon recorded near-record numbers of black storm-petrels. However, the fog prevented us from finding those huge rafts of thousands of storm-petrels. Martin Meyers images from this day, are below. Copyright, Martin Meyers.
A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, below, in Peter Pyle's hands, landed on the vessel.
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH found the only piece of wood on the upper structure of the boat.
The long-line vessel, CAPTAIN COOK was dropping its' line.
On September 30th we departed from the Clipper Yacht Harbor for the Farallones Islands on board "Outer Limits." The morning was bright and sunny at the harbor. However, the islands were enshrouded in fog. The NORTHERN GANNET was still coming to Saddle Rock in the afternoons. So, I hatched a plan with the captain to head offshore to the Continental Shelf, first thing rather than after visiting the islands. We were about 8 miles off the North Islands, when leader Peter Pyle spotted an unusual shearwater with a scaly back and long, wedge-shaped tail. He managed to swing his camera up to grab a couple shots of a light morph WEDGE-TAILED SHEARWATER. The vast majority of the folks on board did not see this shearwater, including me. We were in an area with loads of marine life— Pacific White-sided Dolphins and many shearwaters, South Polar Skuas and a few Black-footed Albatrosses. Peter Pyle has seen more birds than anyone else on the Farallon Islands and on this date he added THREE new birds to his list: Northern Gannet, Eurasian Collared Dove and Ruddy Duck! Go Peter!!
WEDGE-TAILED SHEARWATER, above. MANX SHEARWATER, below. Both images, copyright, Peter Pyle.
Suddenly, someone spotted a tall dorsal fin of a male ORCA. As the captain was about to position the boat for photographs, two more ORCAS appeared nearer our vessel. Many of us managed to obtain images of the second male and a female. (Orca photographs may come later). Seconds later, Peter Pyle spotted a MANX SHEARWATER, images above and below. Many birders on board did see this rare shearwater. Finally, we had a report of a GREAT WHITE SHARK ATTACK in progress at the islands. So, we high-tailed it to the spot, but when we arrived it was over. Apparently, it wasn't much of a show. However, the NORTHERN GANNET sitting on Saddle Rock was a big hit!
October 1 found us gathered at Pillar Point, Half Moon Bay, although many birders skipped this trip to chase the reported COMMON CUCKOO at Watsonville. After viewing several MARBLED MURRELETS just outside of the harbor, we headed offshore to the Pioneer Canyon where we found clear, blue 59 F water. The entire day was clear and quite warm. It was 100 F many places onshore! We enjoyed a nice day at sea, working our way back to the 100 fathom edge.

Shearwater Journeys thanks all the birders who came from near and far, to make these trips so successful. We hope to see you, again. Many thanks to Western Field Ornithologists for connecting with us, as well.

The leaders for these trips were as follows:
SEP 27, BODEGA BAY: PETER PYLE, SCOTT TERRILL, LINDA TERRILL, JIM DANZENBAKER, LIST HUG, DEBI SHEARWATER
SEP 27, BODEGA BAY PHOTOGRAPHER'S TRIP: VINCE ORSINI
SEP 30, FARALLON ISLANDS: PETER PYLE, RUSS BRADLEY, ANNIE SCHMIDT, DEBI SHEARWATER
OCT 1, HALF MOON BAY: PETER PYLE, SCOTT TERRILL, LINDA TERRILL, DEBI SHEARWATER

The complete species lists for all four trips can be found below. It shows how doing more than one trip can add immensely to one's seabirding experience. The weather could not have been more different between all three dates!
