FORT BRAGG SEABIRD TRIPS

Howdy, Seabirders,

Pelagic trips from Fort Bragg offered by Shearwater Journeys, Inc. this season are scheduled for FRIDAY, AUGUST 24 and SATURDAY, AUGUST 25. Both trips will be aboard the TREK II, an excellent vessel with a large bow. These trips will target, specifically, HAWAIIAN PETREL, a Federally Endangered Species. Of the single day seabird trips off the west coast, these trips offer the best chances for finding this petrel. We have had about a 50% success rate. Therefore, it is best to sign up for both days! We have had past weekends where one trip found Hawaiian Petrels, and the very next day did not!

Past trips from Fort Bragg have included not only HAWAIIAN PETREL, but also, such rare seabirds as MANX SHEARWATER, STREAKED SHEARWATER, MURPHY'S PETREL, SHORT-TAILED ALBATROSS, LAYSAN ALBATROSS, SHY ALBATROSS, HORNED PUFFIN and more. Please note that these trips can be combined with the following two trips: Wednesday, AUGUST 22 departing from Bodega Bay and Monday, AUGUST 27, departing from Half Moon Bay. If you are traveling a long distance, it makes sense to try to book on as many trips as possible during your stay.

All trips depart from Noyo Harbor at 6:30 a.m. and return between 4:30 - 6 p.m. Parking is free (do not park in spaces marked for Silver's Wharf). Directions are here. Dress warmly, including waterproof outer layers, hats and gloves. Bring lunch and drinks. Restroom is available on board. This is a large, stable vessel, however, you should take seasickness precautions. Advance reservations for overnight accommodations are recommended. The year 2011 was a fabulous one for seabirding with Shearwater Journeys. The single most spectacular highlight of the fall season was two sightings of the mega-rarity, GREAT-WINGED PETREL on August 26, Monterey and September 17, Half Moon Bay trips. LAYSAN ALBATROSS was recorded from every port on nine different trips. Rare in California, a GREAT SHEARWATER was observed on July 30 off Half Moon Bay. Of course, the regular fall migrants were recorded throughout the fall season. Some 1,135 birders participated in 36 day long trips with Shearwater Journeys in 2011. We continue to operate the most comprehensive selection of seabirding trips on the west coast of North America. This is an update regarding Shearwater Journeys'upcoming pelagic trips. Spaces are still available on the WED, AUG 17 pelagic trip, departing at 0630 from BODEGA BAY on the NEW SEA ANGLER. I spoke with the skipper tonight, who said that the marine forecast was good.

FORT BRAGG TRIPS: Depart at 0630 from NOYO HARBOR on the TELSTAR (NOT the Trek II). Try the Surf Motel in Fort Bragg, and say that you are with Debi Shearwater. They might still offer you a discounted room. More information on this blog report.

HUNTING THE HAUNTING HAWAIIAN PETREL

Seabirders,

Are you on the hunt for HAWAIIAN PETREL (Pterodroma sandwichensis)? A possible recent sighting off the edge of the Continental Shelf, west of the Farallon Islands yesterday, has prompted a rash of inquiries.

The endangered Hawaiian Petrel breeds in the Hawaiian Islands at the summit areas of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, Hawai'i, Haleakala, Maui, and forested areas on Hawai'i, Kaua'i, and Lana'i. They population has been seriously impacted by loss of habitat, predation, as well as threats at sea. Tracking of four individuals, at sea has shown that these pterodromas foraging trips can exceed 10,000 km, passing right off the northern coast of California. Scientists believe that they use high pressure systems to aid and speed their flight across the central Pacific Ocean. See the tracking map on the Oikonos web site.

Shearwater Journeys has been a leader in pursuing this species off the northern California coast. No other seabirding trips have recorded this as often as Shearwater Journeys. The single best trips for spotting Hawaiian Petrel are during August from Fort Bragg. On one trip, we were able to follow a Hawaiian Petrel for a record 17 minutes! On another day, I announced at the dock that we would definitely not see any Hawaiian Petrels, as the seas were simply flat calm. Yet, we discovered not one, but three Hawaiian Petrels that day! Some were sitting on the water! The second best shot for finding this species would be the trips from Bodega Bay. One particular day, we found not only the first Northern Hemisphere and North American record of GREAT-WINGED PETREL, but also a HAWAIIAN PETREL flew up the wake on the way home. Two seabird mega-rarities in one day! Next best trips would be those departing from Half Moon Bay. We've not had enough trips from this harbor to know how things will pan out. To date, the trips that we have done have been superbly outstanding. Monterey Bay trips can turn up almost anything, but the further south one goes, the chances of Hawaiian Petrel seem to be less likely.

FORT BRAGG PELAGIC TRIPS: HAWAIIAN PETREL

Shearwater Journeys is offering four fabulous pelagic trips departing from Fort Bragg to search for the endangered Hawaiian Petrel, on August 19, 20, 21 and 22.

Much of our knowledge of the Hawaiian Petrel, Pterodroma sandwichensis, remains a mystery. Like all pterodromas, it is a truly pelagic seabird, ranging across the seas. Known to Hawaiians as, 'Ua'u, for their haunting, nocturnal calls, scientists are just now beginning to unravel the life history of this species. H.T. Harvey and Associates (David Ainley) teamed with Oikonos, among others, to begin studies. Four radio tagged petrels were tracked in the summer of 2006. It was found that they make a clockwise loop throughout a broad area of the north Pacific, bringing them within the northern California coast. Fort Bragg has consistently offered the best hopes for offshore birders to score this species on their life list. Indeed, Bob Ake, who was doing a Big Year in 2010, scored it for not only a year tick, but a life bird tick!

Details of this year's trips are as follows:

Meet at 6:30 am in Noyo Harbor at the boat, TELSTAR. Check in with the leaders prior to boarding. Parking is free. Dress warmly, bring rain pants and lunch.

Accommodations in Fort Bragg: I have arranged for special rates at the Surf Motel & Garden in Fort Bragg for the Shearwater Journeys' group. They will hold a block of rooms for the SJ group until July 15th. Even if you are already booked elsewhere, I urge you to check this motel out. The rates are the lowest I have seen in Fort Bragg. Rooms with single queen, double queens, and king beds are available. All rooms include a refrigerator and WiFi. The gardens are lovely, and may attract hummingbirds. Please contact the motel at: 800-339-5361. You will need to request the Shearwater Journeys' discount.

Although the HAWAIIAN PETREL was without a doubt the highlight of our trips in 2010, we also had many other extremely "good" seabirds. These included: LAYSAN ALBATROSS, WILSON'S (third Mendocino County record), FORK-TAILED, LEACH'S and ASHY STORM-PETRELS, XANTUS'S and MARBLED MURRELETS, SOUTH POLAR SKUA, all three species of jaegers: POMARINE, PARASITIC and LONG-TAILED (125 on one trip!), FRANKLIN'S GULL, ARCTIC TERNS and TUFTED PUFFIN (three on one trip). One thing to notice is that, like past years, not every trip finds Hawaiian Petrel. For this reason it is definitely a good idea to partake in more than one trip! For 2011, we have four trips on offer. Most folks who are coming a long distance will be doing all four trips. NOTE: only ONE of the two trips observed HAWAIIAN PETREL! It is not found on every trip. It is a hike to get to Fort Bragg. So, once you are there, take advantage of all that it has to offer. Indeed, there is much to offer in terms of birding, wine tasting, scenery and more.

These Fort Bragg departures could be combined with the Wednesday, August 17th departure from Bodega Bay. Spend the night of August 17th in Bodega Bay after the boat trip, and drive up the extremely scenic Highway 1 north to Fort Bragg. Excellent land birding can be found all along this route. More on this in a later blog.

BREAKING OFFSHORE NEWS!

Howdy, Seabirders,

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better— Peter Pyle sent me a report from yesterday's survey. He spotted a DARK-RUMPED PETREL over the Davidson Seamount. Peter and Abe were beginning to pack up the flying bridge after studying 1000s of COOK'S PETRELS. Suddenly, Peter noticed a large, dark-backed Pterodroma petrel. He studied it, got Abe on the bird. Both shot their cameras, but alas, the "winged racer" got away. So, they are unable to say if it was a Hawaiian Petrel or a Galapagos Petrel. So, now we know that Dark-rumped Petrels are out there, too!

Other highlights of this day, July 25, 2010, as reported by Peter Pyle, included: 725 COOK'S PETRELS, 425 Leach's Storm-Petrels, 10 Long-tailed Jaegers, 15 Arctic Terns, 10 Xantus' Murrelets, 2 Cuvier's Beaked Whales, probable Baird's Beaked Whales, 80 Fin Whales and a variety of dolphins. A Baird's Sandpiper landed on the ship at the end of the day, above the center of the Davidson Seamount!

Peter and Abe are now headed into shore. They were about 15 n miles off Half Moon Bay when I last heard from them. You can catch up with them on Shearwater Journeys' trips this fall. Peter will be co-leading the July 31st trip departing from Half Moon Bay.

PLEASE NOTE: The July 31 Half Moon Bay trip is SOLD OUT. For all participants reading this email, please be at least on time, and preferably early to the boat. 7 am at the latest. We would like to get off on time, or earlier, in order to get offshore.

If you are looking for either Cook's Petrels, or Dark-rumped Petrels, I would highly recommend the following trips: Aug 11 from Bodega Bay (only a few spaces left) and August 13 & 15 from Fort Bragg. TRIP REPORT: 18 OCTOBER 2009 FORT BRAGG

Howdy, Seabirders,

Folks on board Shearwater Journeys' October 18, 2009, departing from Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg enjoyed a beautiful day, with non-stop seabirding. Most trips from this port head for Noyo Canyon, to the north. However, since the weather and sea conditions were so good, I decided to head south to the Point Arena Buoy, Navarro Canyon and Arena Canyon. In years past, this has been a great hangout for albatrosses. We were not disappointed, as we saw flocks of 50+ BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSSES, sitting on the water. In all, we tallied 168 Black-foots for the day. Hundreds and hundreds of CASSIN'S AUKLETS were feeding on krill between shore and the 100 fathom line, along with 2 BLUE WHALES and 2 HUMPBACK WHALES. The nearshore seabirding was best, as offshore, we lost the vast majority of the birds. Some very nice schools of PACIFIC WHITE-SIDED and NORTHERN RIGHT WHALE DOLPHINS were on the shelf, as well. A single FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATER was a highlight for many of the folks on board, as well as a county bird. FOS (first of the season) MEW GULL was spotted amongst the many gulls following the boat. Two SABINE'S GULLS were a good find this late in the season. Finally, on the way home, two ANCIENT MURRELETS were spotted. Our captain did a great job of getting the boat positioned so that everyone on board could see these little birds, FOS for me, as well as a Mendocino County bird for me!
